The Nope Book Tag

This is a fun little book tag I found on Tales from the Mind of Kristian‘s page. If you don’t follow him, you should. The Nope Tag has lots of questions about the books and characters you can’t stand!

Questions:

  1. Ending: A book ending that made you go NOPE either in denial, rage or simply because the ending was crappy. I read The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath this year and, although the ending implies some sort of future for Esther, it seems like she has been numbed. Like, the only point to it all is survival.
  2. Protagonist: A main character you dislike and drives you crazy. So many in George R R Martin’s novels of A Game of Thrones, but mostly Sansa Stark.
  3. Series: A series that turned out to be one huge pile of NOPE after you’ve invested all of that time and energy on it, or a series you gave up on because it wasn’t worth it anymore. I couldn’t finish Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, although I loved the first one.
  4. Popular pairing: A Ship you don’t support. Sorry all, but Bella and Edward in the Twilight books. Jacob is much better.
  5. Plot Twist: A plot twist you didn’t see coming or didn’t like. The plot twist in the Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro made me so sad for ages.
  6. Protagonist action/decision that made you shake your head nope. I know it is part of the charm of the book but Prof Don Tillman in the Rosie Project makes so many annoying choices that you just want to shake him (but not really or he’ll take you out!)
  7. Genre: A genre you will never read. I really don’t like crime novels, especially when the victims are children.
  8. Book format: Book formatting you hate and avoid buying until it comes out in a different edition. Just really small print.
  9. A trope that makes you go nope. I love tropes as long as they are done well, but I am not really a fan of the ‘ugly girl gets a makeover’ idea.
  10. Recommendation: A book recommendation that is constantly hyped and pushed at you that you refuse to read. Gone Girl – not really sure why!
  11. Cliche/pet peeve: A cliche or writing pet peeve that always makes you roll your eyes. When the girl is so emotionally dense that she chases the bad guy the whole book then realizes she has been in love with her best friend the whole time.
  12. Love interest: The love interest that’s not worthy of being one. A character you don’t think should have been a viable love interest. Edward in Twilight!
  13. Villain: A scary villain/antagonist you would hate to cross and would make you run in the opposite direction. The ‘It’ in A Wrinkle In Time is quite terrifying to me; controlling minds and the surroundings at will.
  14. Death: A character death that still haunts you. I am still outraged by all of the deaths in the Poldark books / TV series.
  15. NOPE! Author: An author you had a bad experience reading and have decided to quit. The last book I really didn’t like was On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah, but I won’t stop reading her books, in case there is another The Nightingale or The Great Alone. Every book can’t be a winner, right?

Tagging Author Jensen Reed, Saturday Nite Reader, Jen Chaos, Jo Linsdell (if you have time!) and anyone else who wishes to do it.
