Best Books Set in a Hot Country

It is winter here, the shortest day of the year. We had a beautiful clear but chill evening last night, perfect for gazing at the stars. And currently, it is 3 degrees Celcius, with the sun struggling to come out from behind the clouds. So, I am very happy to be hosting the post about books set in hot places. I can sit here, cold fingers tapping on the keyboard and imagine the warm sun on my back.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

Freshwater is a novel set in Nigeria about a girl called Ada. It blends spirituality with coming-of-age, identity, sexuality and mental health issues seamlessly. The writing style is a puzzle, that begs to be deciphered as you read. It is written fiercely from a unique point of view that is somehow relatable for anyone who has felt displaced.

The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

The Rosie Project is a novel set in Australia and one of my top reads of all time. Professor Don Tillman needs a wife, so he approaches it the same way as he approaches science. He writes a list of the variables needed for the perfect wife. Then he begins crossing women off it. A tale to keep you believing that love is in the ‘every day’ and that everyone has their soul mate. It just can’t always be boiled down to a science.

Summer Blog Hop

Have you been following all of our bookish posts? We are touring around lots of different book lovers’ blogs for the month of June. This is what the other voracious readers had to say.

The entire Fortune Redding Cozy Mystery series by Jana Deleon is set in Texas. I love reading it in winter as I live in summer in my head while it is snowing heavily outside.

Not 100% sure, but I get the impression that the Untamed series, by Madeline Dyer is set in a hot country, like post-apocalyptic Australia or something. Everything is arid and rocky and characters wear shorts and tee shirts and stuff. It’s a great series, full of impactful characters–almost like “Uglies”, but with characters who are more mature about their choices, and on the whole a much better story arc, a kickass heroine I can really get behind, as opposed to Scott Westerfield’s whiny, shallow toddler-of-a-teen. I’m reading and I can feel the heat seeping into my bones–that’s how good it is!

Brandy Potter www.brandypotterbooks.com

The ultimate hot location for me is a jungle. The author I associate most with the Jungle is Rudyard Kipling. Therefore my favorite book set in a hot location would be the Jungle Book. Now I want you to forget the Disney Movie (and you know I hate dissing Disney) but the book shows Mowgli’s growth and relationships with his animal friends in a more realistic and human way. If you haven’t read the book, I suggest that you do. Kipling is a hidden treasure among classic writers.

I’m going to go with Tuscany for Beginners by Imogen Edwards-Jones as I live in Italy and, trust me, it’s hot here at the moment! I also loved this book and hope to visit more of the Tuscany region as it’s a really beautiful place.
