The Blurb

The Otherworld doesn’t exist… or does it? Brigid is a teenage girl living a boring life with her boring family in her boring city of Dunedin, New Zealand. Brigid’s life becomes a lot less boring when she visits the ruins of Cargill’s Castle and her arm starts to glow. Her insides scream out for her to touch the cold stone walls. She can’t resist and gets pulled through to a depressed and desperate world. Love, betrayal and war are on the other side, but the worst part is, she’s supposed to save a Goddess and the Otherworld at the same time. How was she supposed to do that… she’s just a teenage girl!

The Verdict

The main character, Brigid, is a seventeen-year-old from Dunedin. She gets caught up in an exciting adventure, which will make her question her relationships. I really enjoyed the story. I was drawn in to the plot, and rooting for Brigid to complete her quest. The cast of characters include some well-rounded friends and some magical creatures.

Having lived in Dunedin, I loved all the details of the familiar landscapes. It took me straight back to the green hills and the rugged cliffs. The fantastic elements of Celtic folklore blend in nicely with the Scottish city of Dunedin.

The Sun Goddess of Cargill’s Castle is a light read and I wanted to keep reading to see what happened next. I would recommend this to readers of ages 11 to 15, who like Harry Potter.
