Have you read a book because of the cover?

Today’s discussion question asks if you have read a book because of the cover.

I have definitely bought a book because of the cover – The Price of Time by Tim Tigner. I love any book that plays with time; time-slip, time travel, alternate realities, flashbacks, glimpses of the future. So I couldn’t resist this one.

Would your character change…

If you had all the money in the world?

And all the time?

Would you become a better person? Or worse?

These are the questions the reader is asked to think about in The Price of Time. I am still reading this one but the premise of stopping ageing and thinking about how far people would go to keep it a secret is gripping stuff!

I just love the flowery script, but knowing Du Maurier’s work, I knew the story would be anything but. The story is set in the pastoral life of Cornwall but with some seriously disturbing undertones. This one did not disappoint!

I Am Watching You by Teresa Driscoll is a book I snagged as an ebook deal the second I saw the cover. Something about it just drew me right in! This book is an intense tale centering around the disappearance of a young woman and told through the eyes of various characters that were involved. If you’re looking for a thriller that will keep you guessing right up to the very end, then this is a book for you!

One book? Okay… Pretty sure that would be Uprooted by Naomi Novik. I honestly didn’t know what to expect from it–it just looked like an enchanting fairy tale from the cover, with the brown-haired girl and the rose and the yellow cover… definite call-backs to a “Beauty and The Beast” sort, and it was, though a whole lot more besides! That was the moment I fell in love with Novik’s writing–it was just so enthralling and compelling and beautiful!

There were other books, too, that I read because of the cover: Reckless by Cornelia Funke, The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson. Then, too, were the books I steadfastly avoided because I thought, based on the cover, that it was going to be one thing… only to discover upon reading it that it wasn’t that thing, and I would end up loving it! Books like Code Name: Verity by Elizabeth Wein, Cinder by Marissa Meyer, and Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier–all of these books had cover designs that I assumed would just be shallow, campy, teen-smut kind of stories, but they were not! Code Name: Verity was about a young female spy during WW2, and the female pilot who was tasked with bringing her behind enemy lines–they get shot down and separated, but they had formed a friendship that lasted for a long time! Cinder was the first in a cyberpunk-dystopian re-telling of a whole bunch of fairy tales (hands-down the best re-telling I’ve encountered thus far!) and Ruby Red was the start of a brilliant trilogy that was not so much about “will-they-won’t-they” “I-hate-him-I-love-him” obsessive kind of drama, but there’s time travel and espionage and a whole lot more besides!

Just one book I read because of the cover? Mine would probably have to be Brett by Melissa Foster. It’s my favorite (so far!) of the Bad Boys After Dark series and that cover . . . it just gives me shivers! Absolutely love it 🙂

  1. Sorry all, someone let me know the comments weren’t working! Hopefully all fixed now. 🙂🙂

  2. I’m glad you had it fixed. I was wondering what was going on.
The cover of “My cousin Rachel” seems a bit too busy for me, but the other two definitely catch your eye.
I have to say that covers (together with blurbs and titles) are what attracts me to the book most of the time. Yes, I do judge a book by its cover.

  3. Thanks for your thoughts, Goldie. What sort of cover do you look for? Bold, colorful, wordy or minimalist?

  4. Definitely not wordy. I like the cover to be about the image, title, author. As far as everything else is concerned, it really depends. It needs to be cohesive, but I’ve read bright and dark covered books.
