Look at this fab pile of books! On a weekend of relentless rain and snotty noses here in New Zealand, I’m simultaneously reading two of these and my husband is reading the other. I have been looking for reviews of great books to make you think and these ones kept coming up. My feet are warm from the old-fashioned (and labour intensive) heat from a roaring fire. I don’t often read ‘real’ books anymore as I usually use the eReader, so I’m running my hand over the covers like a crazy person.
The Great Alone
This is the second book by the author of The Nightingale, Kristin Hannah. I’ve heard so much about this one so I had to give it a try. It seems as if every person and his or her dog is reviewing it. From the first page I was hooked – I mean, the main character is a scrawny girl who listens rather than talks and who loves to read. Yes please.

Artemis
Andy Weir’s next book has been sitting by the bed for the last few months since He got it for his birthday. Last weekend, he finally read it and casually slipped out that I should read it too. Of course, I was just waiting for him to finish to wrench it from his grasp. I knew it had a female protagonist and was written by a male author.

Dark Matter
This is a mind-bending novel I recommended to Him after devouring it a few weeks ago. Can’t wait to see if He loves it as much as I did.
“We’re all just wandering through the tundra of our existence, assigning value to worthlessness, when all that we love and hate, all we believe in and fight for and kill for and die for is as meaningless as images projected onto Plexiglass.”

Becoming Marie Antoinette
I’m listening to this wonderful story by Juliet Grey on Audiobook. Delightful flashes of the condescending attitudes of all the people in Marie Antoinette’s early life in Vienna make for a great escape while cooking the dinner.
